In most African organisations, Diversity Equity and Inclusion(DEI) is still foreign and some still feel there is no gender bias in the business world.
However, this report highlights the significant lack of gender diversity in the African startup ecosystem. In 2022, just 21% of African startups secured funding in and had at least one female co-founder, while only 11.7% had a female CEO. Of the just over $4 billion raised by ventures in the period in question, only 9.1% went to companies co-founded by a woman, and just 2.9% to startups with a female CEO or equivalent.
The report also highlights the challenges facing women in the startup world, such as unconscious bias, lack of role models, and limited access to funding.
